Conservative warns Dems to get it together and confront Trump’s 'true menace'

Over the years, veteran conservative columnist/author and former Nancy Reagan speechwriter Mona Charen has frequently criticized liberals and progressives. But Charen is a scathing opponent of former President Donald Trump, enthusiastically supporting President Joe Biden in the 2020 election.
In an article published by the conservative website The Bulwark on July 2, however, Charen is vehemently critical of the way Democrats have handled Biden's widely lambasted performance during his first 2024 debate with Trump.
Charen warns Democrats to get their act together or risk exposing the United States to the "true menace" that a second Trump presidency would be. And she stresses that the U.S. Supreme Court's controversial 6-1 immunity ruling in Trump v. the United States makes the situation all the more dire.

"Until this week," Charen argues, "one institution that mostly resisted the prevailing winds was the judiciary — Aileen Cannon, Clarence Thomas, and Samuel Alito notwithstanding. With Trump v. United States, that is gone. Another domino falls — a massive one. The decision, which may rank among the most egregious in American history, places the president above the law and creates a glidepath for massive abuse of power, if not outright dictatorship."
Charen continues, "It is against this backdrop that we must consider the Biden candidacy. The past week has demonstrated that the only check left against autocracy in our own country is the vote on November 5. The stakes were massive before Trump v. United States. They have become astronomical since. The question all of us must answer is: Are we willing to gamble our democracy on Biden's capacity to win?"
Post-debate polls, Charen observes, are "confirming" the damage that Biden's late June debate performance did to his campaign.
"The Biden who was revealed last Thursday night cannot defeat Trump," Charen laments. "Remember: The 2020 version of Biden barely did. If Biden were to withdraw from the race, he would be hailed immediately as a statesman who put country before self-interest, and there would be a rush of affection and appreciation for him among Democrats."

Democrats, Charen stresses, need to think hard about who their 2024 presidential nominee will be and act fast.
"It may be Kamala Harris, but it may be someone else," Charen writes. "The Democratic Party is the oldest continuously functioning political party in the world. Everything is riding on whether it remains a strong institution capable of fulfilling its purpose. Right now, its overriding purpose is to keep Trump from power."
