Wisconsin will be one of the most closely watched battleground states in 2024. President Joe Biden's reelection campaign views Wisconsin, which has a Democratic governor (Tony Evers) and a GOP-controlled state legislature, as a must-win state.

One of the state's prominent Republicans is Gerard Randall, who serves as vice chairman of the Wisconsin Republican Party and is also executive director of the Milwaukee Education Partnership (a one-person nonprofit).

WPR's Corrinne Hess reports that some members of the Milwaukee Board of School Directors are now "questioning whether" the nonprofit — which "has received nearly $1.3 million in no-bid district contracts over the past decade" — is "delivering on its promises to improve student achievement."

According to Hess, "Several high-profile officials say the nonprofit has listed them in tax filings as board officers without their knowledge…. The Milwaukee Education Partnership gained a national reputation 25 years ago for bringing together groups across the region to improve educational and economic outcomes in the state's largest school district. But the group lost steam when its founder, then-University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Chancellor Nancy Zimpher, left town in 2003. Randall took over in 2011."

Hess notes that in the past, the partnership "included the Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Commerce, the Milwaukee teachers union, Milwaukee Area Technical College and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee." But all of them, according to Hess, have since "ended their association with the partnership."
