'Heartless' far-right GOP congressman slammed over claim Gaza babies are 'not innocent civilians'

On Thursday, February 1, the Associated Press reported that the number of deaths in Gaza due to the Israel-Hamas War had, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, passed 27,000. The conflict started on Saturday, October 7 — a day that has been called "Israel's 9/11" — when Hamas carried out a vicious terrorist attack against Israel that, Israeli officials say, left more than 1100 people dead.
The progressive Code Pink held a pro-Palestinian protest outside of the office of Rep. Brian Mast (R-Florida) on January 31, and the far-right pro-Donald Trump congressman expressed no sympathy for the thousands of Palestinians who have died in Gaza.
A Code Pink video shows Mast telling demonstrators, "It would be better if you kill all the terrorists and kill everyone who are supporters."

When a Code Pink demonstrator asked Mast if he had seen images of Palestinian babies killed during Israeli forces' anti-Hamas operation in Gaza, he responded, "These are not innocent Palestinian civilians."
Mast remarked that that the "half a million people starving to death" in Gaza should have elected a government that "doesn't go out there and attack Israel on a daily basis." The far-right Republican, however, failed to acknowledge that many Palestinians are anti-Hamas.
A Code Pink protester noted that much of Gaza's infrastructure has been destroyed since October 7; Mast responded, "And there's more infrastructure that needs to be destroyed…. Did you not hear me? There's more that needs to be destroyed."
One of the demonstrators told Mast, "You are heartless. Do you realize how heartless you are?"

The New Republic's Tori Otten notes that this wasn't the first time Mast expressed indifference to Palestinian civilians killed in Gaza.
According to Otten, "Mast's horrific comments — and the chilling way in which he delivered them — should come as no surprise. In November, just a few weeks after the war began, Mast compared Palestinian civilians to Nazis and implied that they are all guilty for Hamas' atrocities. 'I would encourage the other side to not so lightly throw around the idea of innocent Palestinian civilians, as is frequently said,' he said on the House floor."
