'What about white females?' GOP rep calls Kamala Harris 'a DEI hire'

Rep. Tim Burchett (R-TN) on Monday called Vice President Kamala Harris “a [Diversity, equity, and inclusion] hire,” telling CNN’s Manu Raju “when you go down that route, you take mediocrity.”
CNN's Manu Raju interviewed Burchett shortly after former House Speaker Rep. Nancy Pelosi (R-CA) endorsed Harris in the wake of President Joe Biden’s shock decision to withdraw from the presidential race on Sunday. Pelosi reportedly worked behind the scenes to convince the president of his electoral shortcomings, “[playing] a critical role in delicately nudging President Joe Biden to the exits,” NBC News reports.
With Pelosi’s full-throated endorsement of Harris, Raju reports “potential rivals for the Democratic nomination [are] falling in line behind Kamala Harris, and also Democratic leaders [are] doing so as well.”

In a Captiol Hill interview, Raju asked Burchett “about the fact that [Republicans] will be going up against someone who would be the first Black South Asian woman who could be President of the United States and what that means for the Republican campaign.”
Burchett then launched into an attack on Biden.
"First off he said he’s going to hire a Black female for vice president, and he just skipped over — what about what about white females — what about any other group?" Burchett asked. "When you go down that route, you take mediocrity, and that's what they have right now as vice president.”
“Are you suggesting she was a DEI hire?” Raju asked.

“100 percent,” Burchett replied. “She was a DEI hire.
“[Biden] said he was going to hire — and then she didn’t —” Burchett continued before trailing off.
“Her record is abysmal, at best,” the GOP representative added.
