Election 2024

After President Joe Biden dropped out of the 2024 race and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for president, some pundits wondered if perhaps Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear would seek the position.

But during a Monday morning, July 22 appearance on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," the centrist Democrat made it clear that he has no intention of running for president this year — and he appeared to be auditioning for Harris' running mate if she officially becomes the nominee.

Beshear — a two-term Democratic governor in a deep red state — told MSNBC's Willie Geist, "I am excited to fully endorse Vice President Harris for the next president of the United States. The vice president is smart and strong, which will make her a good president. But she's also kind and has empathy, which can make her a great president. And the contrast between her and those running on the other side couldn't be clearer."

The Kentucky governor praised Harris' background as a prosecutor, noting his own anti-crime background. And he gave an indication of what he might sound like on the campaign trail as Harris' running mate.

"As a prosecutor, as an attorney general like I used to be, she prosecuted rapists, domestic abusers — stood for victims and put away those abusers," Beshear told Geist. "Now, look at the other side, where (Sen.) J.D. Vance calls pregnancy arising from rape inconvenient. No, it's just plain wrong."

The governor added, "He suggests that women should stay in abusive relationships."
