House Republican admits bank records 'are not' evidence of President Biden’s alleged corruption

United States Representative Mike Turner (R-Ohio), the chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, conceded on Sunday's edition of Face the Nation that Republicans still lack direct proof that implicates President Joe Biden in a scheme spanning his entire career to personally profit from his son Hunter's professional relationships

Congressional Republicans are accusing Biden of corruption at the same time that Department of Justice special counsel Jack Smith is pursuing multiple criminal indictments against former President Donald Trump for allegedly attempting to overturn the 2020 election.

On Friday, Attorney General Merrick Garland assigned David C. Weiss of the District Court for the District of Delaware — whom Trump nominated in 2018 — as special counsel in the ongoing inquiries into Hunter Biden. Yet some Republicans, like Senators Chuck Grassley of Iowa and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, complained that Weiss is giving Biden preferential treatment.

"Weiss has been compromised. His whole team to me has been compromised. The sweetheart plea deal was written for Hunter Biden in a way that no American would get advantage of that deal," Graham told Fox News on Friday.

Grassley similarly tweeted that Weiss "pulled punches/didn't investigate as he should've."

CBS News moderator Margaret Brennan noted to Turner that these same GOP lawmakers are the people parroting Trump's counternarrative that he is a target of political persecution by the DOJ.

"Why would a US attorney appointed by President Trump working under a Republican attorney general [William Barr] with career prosecutors have that level of conspiracy?" Brennan asked.

"Well, it's not conspiracy. That's an actual, that actually occurred that those..." Turner began.

"Did deliberately allow for the statute of limitations to pass?" Brennan interjected.

"I think those are questions that he has to answer," Turner said of Weiss.

"Why did this occur?" Turner posited. "The IRS whistleblowers said that it was interference from the Department of Justice that allowed them to expire. The prosecutor, Weiss, had been working with Hunter Biden and his attorney and actually getting waivers for those types of limitations period, and he stopped getting the waivers. So he certainly was knowledgeable, aware that it was going to be expiring and then something occurred where he allowed those to expire. But, you know, also his appointment is coming right on the heels of [House Oversight Committee Chairman] James Comer's [R-Kentucky] release of bank records that indicate that we're now up to $20 million worth of funds that came from foreign sources. But they're actual bank records."

Comer said in a statement on Wednesday that “during Joe Biden's vice presidency, Hunter Biden sold him as 'the brand' to reap millions from oligarchs in Kazakhstan, Russia, and Ukraine. It appears no real services were provided other than access to the Biden network, including Joe Biden himself. And Hunter Biden seems to have delivered. This is made clear by meals at Café Milano where then-Vice President Joe Biden dined with oligarchs from around the world who had sent money to his son. It's clear Joe Biden knew about his son's business dealings and allowed himself to be 'the brand' sold to enrich the Biden family while he was vice president of the United States. The House Oversight Committee will continue to follow the money trail and obtain witness testimony to determine whether foreign actors targeted the Bidens, President Biden is compromised or corrupt, and our national security is threatened."

Brennan pressed Turner on whether those statements are "evidence connected to Joe Biden."

Turner admitted that "these are not, no. The bank records are right up — the bank records are right on the website of the House Oversight Committee — over $20 million released August 9th that went to Hunter Biden, his family, and business associates that come from China, Russia."
