Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro on Wednesday shut down criticism from Stephen Miller, former speechwriter for Donald Trump, after the one-time White House aide claimed Shapiro’s new automatic voter registration initiative will have “no citizenship verification.”

Shapiro’s office on Tuesday announced a plan to establish Automatic Voter Registration (AVR) in the state. Under the proposal, “an eligible voter 18 or older who applies for a driver’s license or state identification through the DMV would automatically be registered to vote,” according to the governor’s website.

Miller replied to the announcement on Twitter, writing, “I can promise you, there will be no citizenship verification.

POLL: Should Trump be allowed to hold office again?

Asked to respond to that tweet, Shapiro bluntly replied, “Look, I am not going to respond to Stephen Miller. That guy is a dope who can't tell the truth.”

CNN’s Poppy Harlow clarified that she was asking Shapiro to respond “to the substance of what he said,” because “he raises the question others may raise.”

“Right,” Shapiro replied. “Well, he doesn't raise any substance. Here is the actual substance: when you go to get a driver's license, when you go to renew your driver's license, you have to bring identifying documents in order to be able to secure that driver's license. The same documents that are required in order to be able to register to vote.”

“We are relying on a system that already has safeguards built into it to allow someone to be automatically registered to vote,” Shapiro added.
